ZIFF's home in Stone Town's Ngome Kongwe.The 20th edition of the Zanzibar International Film Festival invites African filmmakers to submit their films online for its consideration.

ZIFF 2017 encourages African filmmakers to specifically apply for the Sembene Ousmane Prize that is supported by GIZ and awards US$6000 evenly distributed among three films to enable the filmmakers to produce a new short film for the next edition of ZIFF.

In an article published in Screen Africa of South Africa, ZIFF 2017 says it shall award prizes for African filmmakers in the following categories:
• Bongo Movies Awards: Popular culture films in Kiswahili
• Emerson of Zanzibar Prize Films: Films of all genres about Zanzibar, made by or made in Zanzibar.
• Best African Film and Best East African Talent Award by SIGNIS: The SIGNIS Jury will present its award to a film that is deemed to exemplify universal and spiritual values that enhance human dignity, justice and tolerance through the art of cinematic expression.
• European African Film Festival (EAFF) Award
• Best Documentary by an African female Filmmaker.

Screen Africa says ZIFF is partnering with an organisation called Harambee Africa International ONLUS in presenting a biennial contest dedicated to professional documentary filmmakers and video clips by students under 25 years old.

Martin Mhando, Festival Director, ZIFF.This is the 7th International Communicating Africa Prize for professional reports and/or documentaries by Harambee Africa International ONLUS aimed at supporting moviemakers to make images that are an accurate portrayal of Africa; a more realistic view of Africa, one that reflects the existing conflicts but also shows the reasons for hope; the richness and diversity of its peoples and cultures, the unwavering commitment to development, and at the same time the needs, which are still very real.

The deadline to participate is September 30, 2017. The prize for the winner of the Documentaries and Reports category is €5000. For video clips made by students, the total prize is €1500.

The Deadline for submission is March 15, 2017.
